Death By Computer – And How to Avoid It!

November 23, 2012 by noemi

Is Your Computer Killing You
Death by Computer

We’re all dying every second. There’s nothing we can do to stop that, but that does not mean we have to hasten the process, does it?

There are many things we can do to live a (somehow) healthy life, and spending too much time in front of the computer just might not be one of them. That is not to say that the computer does not help us in so many ways. For those who work online, it is a lifeline of sorts. However, as with most things in life, we can say that moderation is the key.

Here’s a fun infographic focusing on how your computer just might be killing you. Needless to say, it applies depending on the amount of time you spend in front of your device. [Read more…] about Death By Computer – And How to Avoid It!

Data on Data [Star Trek Alert!]

Data on Data
What was the first storage device you ever used? I guess the most accurate answer for me would be the 5 1/4 floppy disk. If you’re really young, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about, but Google it. It will do you some good.

Anyhow, data storage has always been a big thing, even when the Internet was totally different from how he know it today. From the punch cards and magnetic tapes of the old days, we now have USB sticks of all shapes and sizes, not to mention cloud storage.

And of course, what more humorous way to take a look at all these types of data storage than to inject a little bit of Star Trek into the scenario?

Enter Data on Data.

Smartest People: Just How Smart Is Smart?

August 28, 2012 by noemi

10 Smartest People Alive Today
Forrest Gump’s mom is known for one of the smartest quotes ever: “Stupid is as stupid does.”

The label I used may be arguable, but there is some truth to that saying, isn’t there? After all, how many “smart” people do you know who don’t seem to get their act together? And how many “stupid” people do you know who are well-loved by everyone who knows them?

Still, those who’ve got the smarts deserve admiration and respect – recognition at the very least. The guys at Super Scholar threw some ideas, numbers, and facts together to come up with the 10 smartest people alive today. For sure, you can rattle off a couple of names off the top of your head, but why not check the infographic out to see if you have the same people? The Perils of Multitasking

August 16, 2012 by noemi

Multitasking

Ahh, multitasking. One word (albeit a compound one) that can generate a wide variety of emotions. I know a good number of people who will celebrate the fact that they are able to multitask. Effectively, mind you.

In fact, I used to be one of them. I was rather fond of saying that I could do several tasks at the same time and not have my work suffer because of it. Some years down the road, however, I realize that I might have been wrong in my thinking.

Maybe it’s because of having gained some years. Or maybe I was just too caught up in the idea that multitasking is effective. The fact remains that today, I cannot say with all certainty that multitasking is the way to go.

And you know what? I am not alone in this. It’s not the first time I have read about multitasking not being good for the brain, but here’s another piece that might get you thinking as well: The Perils of Multitasking.

Digital Stress and Your Brain

Digital Stress
Digital Stress

Digital stress? Does such a thing really exist?

For some people, it may be an alien concept. Think about these lines.

  • I thrive on stress.
  • I am totally attached to my computer/iPad/iPhone that I will be more stressed if I do not have them with every waking hour.
  • It is imperative – both professionally and personally – that I stay connected all the time.
  • I enjoy being online all the time. There is no way it can stress me out.
  • I have mastered the “art” of multitasking.

You are probably no stranger to those statements. You may have uttered them yourself. However, it might be time for you to consider that this digital life we’re living can be a source of stress and that it can have negative consequences. [Read more…] about Digital Stress and Your Brain

The Science of Star Trek

June 7, 2012 by noemi

Star Trek Science
I can be more stubborn than an mule when I want to be, and I suppose that many of you will be the same when it comes to Star Trek (or replace that with your series/book/movie of choice).

The science of Star Trek, when conceptualized, was clearly science fiction, but who is to say that that science cannot become reality? Certainly, the great minds of our time have worked hard to make huge strides in advancing science, and there ought to be some aspects in the science of Star Trek that have come true (or will come true in the near future).
