August 20, 2012 by noemi

3d-printed meat
World hunger is a very real and pressing issue, although sometimes, it is difficult to understand why. Even in developing countries where there are pockets of starvation in the populace, you will also see excesses when it comes to food. For sure, there is a complex web of underlying reasons for this problem, but no matter what your stand may be in this issue, there is no doubt that there are hungry people all around the world. And what better application for technology than to find ways to feed everyone?

The Perils of Multitasking

August 16, 2012 by noemi

Multitasking

Ahh, multitasking. One word (albeit a compound one) that can generate a wide variety of emotions. I know a good number of people who will celebrate the fact that they are able to multitask. Effectively, mind you.

In fact, I used to be one of them. I was rather fond of saying that I could do several tasks at the same time and not have my work suffer because of it. Some years down the road, however, I realize that I might have been wrong in my thinking.

Maybe it’s because of having gained some years. Or maybe I was just too caught up in the idea that multitasking is effective. The fact remains that today, I cannot say with all certainty that multitasking is the way to go.

And you know what? I am not alone in this. It’s not the first time I have read about multitasking not being good for the brain, but here’s another piece that might get you thinking as well: The Perils of Multitasking.

Call Parade Phone Booths Liven Up the Streets of São Paulo

August 13, 2012 by noemi

Call Parade Phone Booths
There may be no phone booth more iconic than the blue police call box we all know as the TARDIS, but there is no reason to try and remake phone booths into things that are more interesting than your run-of-the-mill box, is there?

I am not sure if phone booths still exist in all cities of the world, but I am pretty sure that there is still at least one in your area. It may not work. It may look totally worn down. But there should be at least one in the vicinity.

But if you live in the city of São Paulo in Brazil, you will have more than one phone booth. And you will definitely take more than a second look at them. That is, if they are part of the Call Parade phone booths project.

Meet The Zeno Boy Robot

Zeno Boy Robot
Zeno Boy Robot

Depending on your age, you might be able to relate when I say I have been reminiscing and thinking a little about The Jetsons and Small Wonder. While I did not watch TV regularly as a kid, these two shows were very popular during that period, and every kid I knew was fascinated with them, probably because of the robots.

Several decades later, we’re still not close to having a robot-person like Vicki (see Small Wonder!), but we just might have something a step closer in the Zeno Boy Robot. [Read more…] about Meet The Zeno Boy Robot

Forget 4D Ultrasound! How About a 3D-Printed Fetus Instead?

3d printing
3D-printed fetus

Okay, I have to admit that I have been all over 3D printing since I heard about it. I have thought of and read about so many applications it could be used for. But for the life of me, it never occurred to me that this technology can be used to replace those high-tech ultrasound thingies done by expecting mothers.

Yeah, forget about 4D ultrasound. Why do that when you can get a 3D-printed fetus? [Read more…] about Forget 4D Ultrasound! How About a 3D-Printed Fetus Instead?

TinkerBrick LEGO Case for the iPod

iPod Touch LEGO Case
iPod Touch LEGO Case

How much do you love your iPod Touch? Why don’t you count the ways?

Prior to going for the iPhone, I was 110% in love with my iPod Touch. It was just that the iPod Touch became redundant because of the iPhone, and I do not really like being superfluous. In any case, this post is for anyone and everyone who is enjoying their iPod Touch to the max.
