Out with Plastic, In with the New Water Soluble Bags from Puma

August 3, 2023 by noemi

Puma's Clever Little Shopper
Puma's Clever Little Shopper

How often do you go shopping? How many plastic bags do you end up lugging around and stowing in some dusty cabinet at home? In our household, we tend to collect lots of plastic bags as they are often the default packaging that shops here use. We do try to make the best of the situation by re-using the plastic as trash bags, so we rarely have to buy trash bags. I know it is not the best solution, but it is better than throwing away all the “unused” plastic.

If Puma’s new idea takes off, though, shopper might not be burdened by excess plastic bags anymore. While many shops have resorted to paper bags, Puma has decided to do something clever. Now I am not against paper bags – I have my own collection as well – but this invention is pretty ingenious.

Puma is now using biodegradable shopping bags called Clever Little Shopper. The bag is made primarily from cornstarch, and all other materials are also 100 percent biodegradable. After use, the bag can be placed in a compost heap. The bag will then decompose naturally in the period of about three months. Now if you are not a very patient person, you can actually speed up the process by dissolving the bag in water!

There is the worrying idea of the bags melting away in rain, or perhaps water condensing on a cold bottle. The last thing that anyone wants is a melting bag with stuff falling all over the place! They say, however, that the bags will NOT dissolve in cold water and that hot water is needed for the material to disintegrate.

In any case, this could be one solution to the over use of plastic bags which only add to the problem of non-biodegradable waste. Here’s a video about this clever little thing.

I have to admit, though, that I have my doubts as to whether the idea would quickly catch on. I suppose it will all boil down to cost and consumer demand. What do you think of the concept? Spread the word if you think it’s worth it!

Paper From Elephant Poo

July 23, 2023 by noemi

Poo Paper
It sounds disgusting, but it does work and it contributes to the environment as well. What Michael Flancman and his group is doing is to gather the excrement of elephants to process it into recycled paper and other paper-based products.

Flancman’s business is based in Thailand where there are many elephant conservation parks. In Chiang Mai, particularly, loads of elephants can be found. You may have seen features on Nat Geo or Discovery Channel – these conservation camps are rather popular tourist destinations. There are even camps that allow tourists to stay for at least a night and participate in taking care of the elephants – feeding them, giving them a bath, and so on.

So where does the all the poo go? If you haven’t seen a live elephant relieve itself, you are missing half of your life. NOT!

Seriously, these humongous creatures aptly excrete a lot of waste, and while this material may be used for fertilizer just like any other waster matter, Flancman and associates decided to do something more creative: “repurposing” the fecal matter which contains a lot of straw and similar undigested material.

What the people do is to gather the waste and wash it with water in order to obtain the fibers. These fibers are then sterilized thoroughly and mixed with other plant material to create the pulp that will be used for paper and other products.

Oh, they are also now using the poo of other animals such as cows, horses, and donkey.

It’s not exactly high-tech but there’s no harm in going back to the basics is there? Oh, and the name of the company is The Great Elephant Poo Poo Paper Co. 😉

Ecotopia: A Worthwhile Facebook Game?

July 15, 2023 by noemi

Ecotopia
For some reason, I have never gotten into FarmVille, which is perhaps the most popular Facebook game of all time. I did find myself wasting lots of hours on CityVille, though, for reasons I cannot explain. Now, here comes another game, which aims to catch the attention of the hordes of people already addicted to Facebook games. Called Ecotopia, the game seems to have some similarities with CityVille and other games in the same category. The big difference is that Ecotopia is being touted as a “green game”. It is being developed by Talkie, in cooperation Conservation International, with Hollywood star Harrison Ford’s support.

The game has not been launched yet, but there is already a Facebook page for Ecotopia. According to what the developers, the game is:

  1. Eco-friendly
  2. A heroes-versus-villain adventure
  3. Players start with an environment that is dirty and inhabitable. The task is to generate resources and eventually create one’s own utopia – with the good of the environment always a prime consideration.

Just like all other social games on Facebook, players can connect to their friends and interact with them via the game. Indeed, no social game will be complete without these features. For those who may already be raising their eyebrows and thinking that the game is nothing more than an escape from reality, Ecotopia does reach out to the real world. I don’t know exactly how the system will work, but the developers say that “players will also be heavily rewarded for performing real-world acts of green and incorporating them into their Ecotopia gaming experience.”

I know many of my Facebook friends do not care about my fish, my mafia, or my city; but if Ecotopia is going to be good as it is being hyped up, I wouldn’t mind risking the ire of some Facebook friends for a worthy cause. Shall we give it a try when it comes out on the 4th of April?

OAT Shoes: Biodegradable Sneakers

July 12, 2023 by noemi

What do you do with your old sneakers? I honestly do not know what happens to mine after I either throw them away or give them way. If we are serious about wanting to make our own contributions to helping the environment, here is a great – although a bit silly – idea that we may want to consider.

At the Amsterdam International Fashion Week’s Green Fashion Competition, a new line of shoes won second place this year. Dubbed OAT shoes, the sneakers can actually be planted when you’re tired of them – or when they give out, for that matter. It can be argued that ANY pair of sneakers can be planted in the ground, but the OAT shoes are the first kind that “sprout”. Now, I don’t know about you, but when I read “sprout”, I think leaves and stems coming out of the ground. How exactly the shoes do that – I have no idea. The concept is pretty cool, though.

Here’s the whole idea in a nutshell. I don’t know about you, but I doubt that any sneakers that I have used will look this fresh, though.
OAT shoes sprout
Here are two variations of the OAT shoes.
OAT shoes green
OAT shoes yellow
Now I know I said that the shoes are cool, but there is no denying that the choice of model is anything but, is there? This is how they demoed the shoes.
OAT shoes hot
These shoes will be available this spring in stores in The Netherlands and Belgium, as well as online for those who are located elsewhere.

The Internet’s Carbon Footprint Will Make You Think Twice

June 9, 2023 by noemi

If you are concerned for the environment, then this post just might make you think twice about spending so much time on your computer and on the Internet. According to The Guardian, the carbon footprint of the Internet is astounding: 300 million tones of carbon dioxide per year. Just to make that more understandable:

• Almost as much as all the coal, gas, and oil burned in Turkey or Poland
• More than half of the fossil fuels that the UK burns
• Imagine every person in the UK flying to the US and back – twice.

Astounding is the word, right? It makes you think – all the effort you’ve been putting into making the world a better place might be going down the drain. All because you spend so much time on the Internet. (Yeah, I am talking about myself here.)

Then again, the Internet does help cut back on energy consumption in so many ways. The same article outlines a couple of points:

• Smart grids are possible because of the Internet, and we all know they save energy.
• Tools such as video conferencing software help cut back on flights (read: higher carbon footprint).

More interesting are the ideas that Leo Hickman posted about a year ago. In his article, he posed the suggestion of cutting back on Internet usage:

Might we now have to ration our use of the internet to ensure its very survival? If so, what would be considering a fair share of the internet? Thirty minutes of browsing a day per person? Fifty megs of download a day? Just as we are being asked to “do our bit” for the environment by flying less, using public transport more, eating less meat and the like, might we now be asked to download fewer bulging multimedia files?

Call me biased and totally subjective, but just how accurate are these figures anyway? Isn’t it possible that the situation isn’t that bad? But yes, this post is making me think twice.

On Being Tech Savvy and Environmentally Aware

May 18, 2012 by noemi

Plastic bags carbon footprint
We don’t normally shout out loud about environmental issues on Daily Bits, but an article that I read some time back on the BBC has got me thinking. The article is titled “What should be done about plastic bags?” and the numbers presented are rather surprising.

We seem to have this idea that plastic bags are bad, and the reusable bag movement has become so big that more and more supermarkets have totally done away with plastics. But is it really justified? Does doing away with plastic bags really make a huge positive impact on the environment? [Read more…] about On Being Tech Savvy and Environmentally Aware
