Urgent Aid Needed After Typhoon Haiyan Devastation

November 12, 2013 by DailyBits

Typhoon Haiyan

Over the weekend Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines leaving a trail of untold destruction. Around 1,700 to 2,500 people are feared to be dead due to the category 5 storm which was the largest ever to make landfall and approximately 600,000 people are now homeless.

The BBC’s George Alagiah just yesterday flew over the region to witness the extent of the damage himself:

The relief efforts in the Philippines need donations to help with the sick, homeless and clear up efforts, any amount you give no matter how small can make a difference.

Please make all donations via the Philippines Red Cross HERE

Donations

For some people, giving to charity is innate. Probably thanks to how their parents raised them, giving to those in need has become part of who they are. For others, giving to charity may have come later in life. When you start giving does not matter, however. It is the intention and the action that arises from the desire that makes a difference.

It has never been easier to raise funds for a cause close to your heart or to donate to specific charities than it is today. Thanks to technology, finding a charity, donating online, or organizing a fundraiser can be as easy as clicking away on your computer. HP Does Good With Anti-Malaria Technology

June 7, 2011 by noemi

Electronics giant Hewlett-Packard might not be the first thing that comes to mind when the subject of mobile technology is brought up, but they are giving back to humanity using this very technology that other entities dominate. Most people in developed countries would not think twice about malaria, and maybe many even think that the disease has been wiped out. While this may be true in many countries, there are still locations where malaria is present. In some parts of the world, malaria poses a serious threat to locals. Botswana is one of these locations.

What HP is doing is working hand in hand with a health monitoring service in the African country, with the aim of tracking outbreaks of malaria and ultimately stopping the outbreaks before they reach too far.

Enter the Palm Pre 2. There was a time when there were people who thought that the Palm Pre 2 just might give the Apple iPhone a run for its money, but it didn’t really happen. And while there might not be too many people using the Palm Pre and Palm Pre 2, at least the technology is being put to good use.

The program is being conducted together with the group Positive Innovation for the Next Generation (PING), the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and Mascom (a network provider in the country). With these significant players collaborating, the people of Botswana will benefit from the program. In the future, the program is meant to be spread to other African countries, with HP continuing to help with the technological aspects. HP may not be your favorite brand, but it still is nice to hear about initiatives like this one, isn’t it?

Jumo: More than Social Networking

December 2, 2010 by noemi

chrishughesEven before I read the details about the newest social networking site in town, I was already feeling positive about the whole idea. Perhaps it was due to the fact that I immediately took notice of its charitable goals.

You have to admit, social networking sites are fun and easily fill up idle time, but at the end of the day, their worth in real life might be up for discussion. With this new site that Chris Hughes has set up, things just might have a better impact.

Called Jumo, the site is primarily aimed at building connections between individuals and non-profits or charitable organizations. Charities will be indexed and people can find – or browse – these entities, as well as evaluate them.

In case the name Chris Hughes seems familiar but you just can’t quite put your finger on it, let me point you in the right direction. He is actually one of the co-founders of Facebook and is also known for having been the director of online organizing for Barack Obama’s campaign back in 2008. It is not a surprise that he is the guy behind Jumo, is it?

I have to be honest – I am wondering if Jumo will actually result in people giving more to charities. If you think about it, Facebook offers its own venues for giving, but how many people actually give to charities via this venue? I wonder if Jumo will be able to take things one step further and result in tangible donations for those who are in need the most.

One question: would you sign up for Jumo and be more active in giving because of it?
