Wear This Shirt and Forget Batteries

July 6, 2023 by noemi

If Zhong Lin Wang (Georgia Institute of Technology) and Jong Min Kim (Samsung Electronics) are successful, we might not to lug around heavy batteries for our mobile devices anymore. The two guys, together with their teams, have unveiled a prototype of their pet project – a flexible energy storage device. This flexible energy storage device is made of zinc oxide nanowires which are incorporated into fibers that are used for everyday clothing. In other words, we just might have shirts and dresses that can function as batteries!

The concept is not that new, actually, but others before this current team were unable to make prototypes that were light enough. In making this new prototype, though, the team made use of supercapacitors which are so tiny that they make the idea feasible. More than being light, these supercapacitors are also very flexible, making them perfect for clothing material.

Of course, more than the flexibility and wearability, we are also concerned about the power capacity of these supercapacitors. Well, the good news is that they can be recharged very quickly and almost endlessly. Even better, the zinc oxide nanowires can be recharged by the person’s heartbeat or a light wind. So if you need to recharge your batteries – literally – you just need to walk a little faster to increase your heart rate and get a bit of wind blowing on the shirt! It does sound too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Since this is all in the development stage, we might not see “battery shirts” in the market any time soon. One thing that is bugging me though: I wonder how much they will sell for?

Mashups have been done of practically everything you can think of. Some of them are awesome, some not so awesome. Here’s a mashup that will make you really happy if you like Star Wars (and are starting to hate Lucas, maybe), and you believe that you were a pirate in your previous life. The tee shirt is called YArr2-D2, definitely not the most imaginative name, but still catchy.

The YArr2-D2 tee shirt is designed by Glen O’Neill, who describes himself as a being “just a big geeky artist”. He is based in Victoria, Canada. His day job is Production Coordinator at a place called The Martlet, but what is really cool is that he designs tees and draws comics in his spare time. From the looks of this latest tee that he designed, we should all be thankful for his employer as it seems he gets the spare time to come up with awesome things that ordinary mortals like you and me can enjoy. Halloween seems to be the talk of the town, and rightly so. From costumes to food to drinks – everything about this holiday seems to incite a different kind of excitement. Yesterday, I shared this web site that has a good selection of pirate costumes that can make you the star of any Halloween party that you go to. If pirates are not your thing and you prefer a time machine that looks like a phone box, then you probably will go for the TARDIS. (I totally understand your sentiment, by the way.) Alternatively, you might want to go with the Daleks.

If you are hooked on the Doctor, here’s something that you will definitely want for yourself: TARDIS Prime. (I know I want one!) It’s a shirt that celebrates the awesomeness that is the TARDIS, while at the same time incorporating the concept of the Transformers. I don’t think anyone can deny just how formidable that combination can be, do you? [Read more…] about The TARDIS Prime Shirt
