We’ve all had our doses of fun following dead authors, revolutionaries, and other celebrities on various social networking platforms. They may not be in this world anymore, but they live on, not only through their work, but also courtesy of witty people who took it upon themselves to take the persona of whichever celebrity.

For fans of Jane Austen, arguably one of the most popular authors of her era, social networking is nothing new. She already has a presence on Twitter, but this time, Jane Austen enters the social world via a different route: Facebook gaming. No, Facebook Does Not Cause Depression

Facebook and Depression

I don’t know why I am such a sucker for these studies, when I know for a fact that I will be confronted with something that is either a no brainer or something totally vague and/or ludicrous. Still, I find myself reading studies, the results of studies, and potential studies…Whatever floats my boat, right?

For sure, you have seen at least one study claiming that Facebook – or maybe some other social network – is the cause of depression. Or dementia. Or some other negative mental or emotional state. Whether you were nodding your head as you read those articles or you were vigorously shaking it in denial, here is another study that might catch your attention as it did mine: Facebook does not cause depression, apparently. Internet Cleanup Campaign Launched by Google, Twitter, and Facebook

Fake antivirus
Malware
Tired of all the malware circulating on the Internet? Who isn’t, really?

As a Windows user for the longest time (as countless other people), I have learned to deal with these things by making sure the security programs are updated regularly and not being stupid by indiscriminately clicking. Having switched to Mac several years ago, I was lulled into a sense of safety. Of course, we all know there is really no such thing.

Today, there are still a huge number of Internet users who fall into the malware trap, no matter what operating system they use. I guess the people behind the biggest names in technology are fed up as well.

Enter Google, Twitter, and Facebook, who have teamed up to help rid the Internet of malware. [Read more…] about Internet Cleanup Campaign Launched by Google, Twitter, and Facebook

Smartphone Use an Indication of Wealth?

April 2, 2012 by noemi Leave a Comment

Blackberry
I would never really have thought about it, but a Reuters article got me thinking. ((Source: Reuters)) A study was conducted by The Luxury Institute, with the goal of finding out how wealthy consumers used their smartphones. In other words, they studied the app usage among the members of this sector.

The conclusion? Wealthy people tend to use their smartphones more for apps geared towards finance, travel, and news. They do not seem to have a proclivity for social apps like Twitter or for gaming apps. [Read more…] about Smartphone Use an Indication of Wealth?

Social Networks Linked to Socially Aggressive Narcissism

Socially Aggressive Narcissism
Too Many Facebook Friends?

So much has been said about Facebook – both negative and positive; and perhaps if we take a close look, we will see more whining than praising. No one can deny that the social network has thrived over the years. And it is not alone. More and more, we see social networks expanding their reach and gathering more active users.

Various theories have been created to explain this boom, not to mention studies conducted to determine the effects of social networks on people who use them a lot. If you are not sick of these kinds of studies, here is something that might interest you: a study showing a link between social networks and socially aggressive narcissism. InstaCover: When Instagram and Facebook Cover Photo Collide

March 20, 2012 by noemi Leave a Comment

Customize Facebook Cover Photo
InstaCover

The new Facebook Timeline has gotten the attention of countless users from all over the world for various reasons. One the one hand, some people loved the new layout. On the other hand, some users dreaded having to switch to the new look without being given the option of retaining the old. There are, of course, those who simply couldn’t care less.

Wherever you lie in the spectrum, it does not really matter if you want to continue using Facebook. Everyone will eventually get the Timeline. For what it’s worth, I am one of those who still have the old look. In the beginning, I really didn’t like the idea of having to switch. At this point, it does not really matter to me. What I am thinking is that one might as well take advantage of what the new layout has to offer.

And when it comes to that, the cover photo is one of the things that you can play around with. I have seen many awesome cover photos, and while I am not all worked up about that, it is easy to see how one can play around with customization. Eye candy for the win!
