Pumped Up Podcasts with PimpMyNews

Wouldn’t it be cool if you literally HEAR the news that you read in the Internet? Well, worry no more, because with this hip websites, you’ll hear news available in the Internet like you’ve never heard them before!

PimpMyNews, as the name itself says, livens up your daily news bits with a playable audio of the latest happening in quite a variety of topics. Here’s what PimpMyNews has to say:

You like things your way. You also like to be current with what’s happening in your world… but you’ve got better things to do than sit at your PC, TV, or radio searching or waiting for content that you like. That’s where PimpMy News comes in…

Taglined “the talking social news site,” PimpMyNews comb the web in search of text-based news and the blogosphore for up-to-date blog posts, and converts them to MP3 format which can be heard as opposed to news being read (an emphasis on that, being R-E-A-D, as the website implied). Actually, I find PimpMyNews as my personal “newsreader” that directly talks to me.

Further, the in vogue PimpMyNews has these features that to me seems unique only to this website:

  • Stay current on the news and blogs YOU care about
  • Save time - your favorite stories come to YOU
  • Listen online or on-the-go - in the car, at the gym - anywhere
  • Express Yourself - share & rate stories, create playlists & more

News That Is Cool

What makes it cool is that it is a variety of the latest technologies all converged into this website. As the website claims, PimpMyNews keeps you “current” on what’s going on in the world you live in, be it about your country, worldwide, or even about what your friends had to say in their blogs. The reaches of this website seems boundless. Also, it puts you in control, since you decide the topics that you want to listen to, and when and where you want to listen to them. Further, it saves you time, because PimpMyNews does the scouring for you, with all the content you need to hear based on your preferences. It also beats the heck out of R-E-A-D-I-N-G, for PimpMyNews “automagically” turns your chosen text and news blogs to MP3 files that you can listen to on your PC, iPod, iPhone (or any MP3 player) anytime, anywhere. Lastly, it’s just plain fun as PimpMyNews allows personalization of your playlists and podcasts, to either share, discuss, or rate with fellow podcasting enthusiasts.

And the good news about this pimping the news up, apart from being transferable to capable audio-playing media devices, is that signing up is a hundred per cent free! That’s right! I wouldn’t be surprised if this website becomes a staple on the Web 2.0 category.

Imagine, with just a computer and a speedy Internet connection, you can listen to any podcast that you prefer. Further, if you are the type who is always on-the-go, with just any media device and podcatcher such as iPod and iTunes, you still get your daily dose of fresh news that you need not read to learn from.

I think it’s the right time to revolutionize, not to mention personalize, the “newsreading” habit of every person in this modern age of Web 2.0. With PimpMyNews, you will always get the latest from almost anything you need to be updated of. What are you waiting for? Try it now!

“Wouldn’t it be cool if you literally HEAR the news that you read in the Internet?”

No, not really. I skim through news feeds while listening to music or podcasts. I can skim things faster than someone can read them to me and decide when I want to slow down & get more detail, something you can’t do with audio.

Thanks for cutting & pasting lots of text from their press release, though.

John, you might be correct about podcasts’ inability to slow down for you, but I believe the people speaking behind those podcasts doesn’t just breeze through the text content as if it was a tounge twister. They just follow the typical way of newscasting (for most), and the others, using their own personal way.

If you’re not comfortable with both ways of podcasting news, then reading (slowly) suits you, as you “want to get more detail.” I am not enforcing you this website, anyway. But I believe there’s a playback button on them, not to mention the movable cursor on the audio or video player to track where you are, and you can move it if you want to go a few seconds back or forward.

And about copying and pasting, I can’t just make up my own features and facts for their website, can I? If I did, then that would be libel, mind you. And I believe I mentioned that what I “copy-pasted” came from the website, as it is my only source of information, since the article IS talking about the website itself. That, my friend, is called attribution.

    Have a good day.

Loki - I think John missed the benefit of the application.

The biggest benefit of PimpMyNews for me is that I can LISTEN to my feeds which leaves my hands and eyes are free to do other things (like snowboard, drive, ride my bike, etc). Try reading your feeds while doing those things and you might get killed.

If you’d rather read than listen, the app also lets you skim through the text of each story.

Very well said, LauriaT. You can do more things if you listen to your news. In the fast-paced lives that we are living today, it generally is normal to multitask, and PimpMyNews just helps us do it better.

Hmm…Loki/Lauriat, if you like it so much, did you try using other similar services?

  6. Loki on March 6th, 2008 7:07 am

Tim, I’ve tried having other podcasts online. Why do you ask?

  7. Tim on March 10th, 2008 3:42 am

Loki, I have tried a few couple services like this, including one that is wayyyyyyy better than PMN. Somehow I get tired listening to the robotic voices. I prefer ‘real human’ podcasts.

Given a choice between CNN podcast by Anderson Cooper and the one created by PMN, which one would you download?

Honestly, I am not a fan of podcasts until the time when they started incorporating hip and cool style of delivering the audio news as how websites like PimpMyNews does. Also, the Web 2.0 movement of having a podcast-slash-social-community website is one of the factors why I wrote this article.

To answer your question, I would go for the ‘real human’ podcasts. A reason for that would be my inclination to the lighter, creative side of life.

Tim/Loki, What are the other services like PimpMyNews?

  10. Loki on March 17th, 2008 1:38 am

Jim, as I am using this one, I haven’t really explored other possible podcasting-slash-online-community website like PimpMyNews. However, if you really want a specific separate service like having only podcasts, then you might want to look at http://www.podcast.net for a directory of podcasts. And with online communities, there are tons out there ready for your bidding.
