Google Unifying Identity of Its Product Users

We are all familiar with Google Accounts. Its a single time sign-up that lets a user field the same user name and password to use any of Google products such as Blogs, Gmail, Maps, GTalk, Orkut, Office Apps etc. Now, Google seems to be coming out with a profiles options which lets users maintain a single entry for their profiles that gets reflected across all the services.

Most organizations now include a feature called Single-sign on that helps employees use a single set of passwords across multiple services while the identity management servers take up the roll of user authentication. Google profiles may be considered as the Single-sign for the netizens, albeit a next version.

If it were only about maintaining a single profile, then it would all be fine. But the article goes on to mention that User profile information may also be searched via Google. That means users will need to take personal precautions to not field data that they consider private.

With Google’s increasing expanse in the Web space, the single profile concept may also add to more targeted advertising as well as perhaps add to more demographic information as to the target audience and the kind of services that will attract more users.
