Cisco Betting Big on Social Network Variants

The Internet has been termed as the information superhighway. But at the hardware levels, it all comes down to bits being shoved at electronic speeds across networks. And no other company knows more about these than the networking giant Cisco.

With all the recent developments in the networking space and the muchrooming of new horizons every other day on the Web, Cisco systems also seems more than keen to get into the fray. After all, why should not the chief equipment provider for the networking world think about profiting on the domains built atop networking.

Recent initiatives by the firm that are bold and quite different from its competitors in the same segment are its EOS and the push for visual networking.

EOS or Entertainment Operating System is Cisco’s web platform that is being tailored for content creators to build communities around their products. Case in point being music publishing firms that can use EOS to create social networks for sale and commuinity building about a particular brand of music.

Visual Networking is what Cisco is pushing as the future of social networking. As of now most of the interaction in the social networking space (and for that reason most of the content on the web) is via text. That is set to change with the availability of more bandwidth and greater innovations in networking technology.

While visual networking is about videos going mainstream in social networking, its a puzzle how it will be come to replace text as such. One thing about text is that its all there for you to read and decipher at your speed. There are fast readers and there are slow readers and there are those who prefer to make a gist of things. Video is more of a constraining media in those terms, locking users into the speed of the presenter.

It will be interesting to see how the networking giants predictions pan out in the online space.
